I'm trying to network 2 computer running windows 7. I can see from my laptop folder in my homegroup on my desktop but i can't actually see any of the files. Any ideas on this, haven't done this type of thing in ages. The files are on an external hard drive.

Did you set the external hard drive as shared in its properties?

Yes, I did but despite that I still couldn't see the files. What I ended up doing was copying everything over to my main drive, reformatting and copying back all the media. Deleted and reset up groups and everything is fine now. Thank you very much for the reply, it was appreciated.
