Hello. I will be swapping hard drives with two laptop that are the same model. I will create a recovery disc for laptop 1 and laptop 2 on the seperate systems each before swapping. then i will swap hard drives and use the same discs on the same computer it was burned from. My questions is. will the registration license number etc still be the same if i do this (will laptop 1 still have same windows and laptop 2 have same windows licenses as before the swap)? i dont want to switch licenses, only hard drives, while maintaing the same windows license to the same laptop serial #.

will the recovery discs wipe off everything including the recovery partition and reinstall a new recovery partition?

lastly (this is for a different computer). if i use Dariks Boot and nuke, would recovery discs still work to reinstall windows

As I remember if it's the same model then it will not throw a "windows is not genuine" error and everything will be fine (if you mean the License key for Windows) License is tied to your install/mobo info.

Unless there's something I am missing your Windows install isn't related to your laptop serial number.

Recovery disks I used for my Asus a while back do not wipe recovery partition but it depends. Do you have something particular in the recovery partition you don't want wiped?

If you used recovery software by a specific manufacturer like Dell or Asus then their recovery disks only work to restore those specific models/makes of hardware. it's best to use a Windows 7 image/install disk for reinstalling windows.

thank you, i only have a recovery disc, how can i make a windows 7 installation disc?

also if recovery partition was deleted, can i reinstall it with a recovery disc?

so windows is related to the Mobo and not the serial? but doesnt the speicifc serial number contain that same mobo

You can't make a Windows 7 installation disc from a recovery disc. You need to have original Windows 7 software. You can download a legal copy from here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

The purpose of the recovery discs is to restore the software on your PC to how it was when you took your PC out of the box, whether it is on a current HD or new HD.

All computers from a given manufacturer (i.e. HP) which have an OEM version of Windows 7 will have the same OEM software serial number and Certificate file for a given version (Home Prem, Professional, etc). It is not tied to the mobo. Only retail versions of Windows 7 have unique product keys.

If you have a Windows 7 installation disc you can use the product key on the bottom of your laptop to activate it as long as it is the same version of Windows 7. You may have to contact Microsoft during the activation process to accomplish this but it is done all the time.
