typing this as i wait for a dvd to burn. just got back from the 24-hour CVS because i actually had to go spend money on blank dvds (5-pack only).

the question is, why doesn't microsoft's bootable usb utility work with .img files? i've had about enough of disk image file type differences for the night after looking for a solution to this (e.g. renaming .img to .iso, converting .img to .iso, booting with the .img file, finding an .img-to-bootable usb utility) so pardon my general ignorance on the subject. don't think i'm crazy because i can only find one directly related google result and i'm a pretty good queryer. beginning to think i just missed the .iso download link. i wonder if the download-only copies will be provided as .img files when it goes live next week.

Every disc image i got from MS was in .iso format so i guess that's why the didn't bother adding support for anything else than .iso to their USB/DVD tool. If the .img you have was from MS, then it's a fail on their part, if not, well they never designed the tool to work with anything else than the files they provide.

yea, from microsoft (partner). could they really require everyone who purchases a download-only copy to burn a dvd and endure the grueling installation files extraction?

Well, digital river uses .iso so MS definitely doesn't require everyone to use DVDs instead of USB, alternatively, there has to be some other utility that allows you to make a bootable USB from a disc image.

the only ones i found were mostly linux or apple based. win32 disk imager corrupted the usb drive (tried more than once, sat through a full format of the 8gb stick more than once). microsoft utility didn't work even after converting .img to .iso. when i booted with only the .img file, it tried but returned a "no bootmanager found" error.
