Hi,
I just purchased a X230 Tablet and want to upgrade it to windows 8. MS is offering the simple-to-use update function - just download the installer and upgrade to windows 8 (exe installer with running windows 7).
I've perfomed this upgrade before on another machine, after the upgrade u can just delete the old windows 7 folder.
I must admit I have made quite good experience with that update. Now I wonder, why so many people recommend to perform a clean W8 installation over the Upgrade?
Can u share your experences/recommendations/suggestions - with that topic? Is there really so much of a difference between these two installations?

Clean install allows you to decide what goes on your machine and what you don't want to reinstall, plus you make sure there aren't any leftovers. There are always some leftovers from the previous Windows version, they're usually not a problem though. It is still pretty impressive how you can upgrade through every windows release in a row: Chain of Fools : Upgrading through every version of windows (HQ) - YouTube.
A clean install is also a good opportunity to do a bit of application and file cleaning. -

And to supplement tijo's insight, with an upgrade, there's always a possibility that a program previously installed will have reduced functionality or no functionality in Winodows 8. The migration is simple and user friendly, but you never know when you may run into a legacy program that won't cooperate.
