Im fixing a clevo but undecided if I should go for windows 7 or 8.1.
It has a 860m inside which is a 11.2 directx 11.2 gpu and as windows 7 only supports up to 11.1 im wondering if 11.2 gives addition benefits like extra fps?
And what when direxct 12.0 comes to windows 8, will that give the edge over to windows 8 more?

Depends on what games you'll play. Windows 7 is fine for the most part. Certain games perform better under Windows 8 like BF4. It's really a matter of preference though.

Rome total war 2, Thief, far cry 3, Crysis 3, Far cry 3 and far cry 4 near future. Are these better in W 7 or 8.1 with a 860m?

Don't forget that Windows 7 will also support DX12; Microsoft already confirmed it.

You know what, you might be right. I was going off of what I watched from 5:00-7:00 here: Windows Graphics and DirectX 12 | Build 2014 | Channel 9
But the Microsoft guy totally obfusticated the answer and I'm still trying to grasp what exactly he said, if anything, about hardware and OS support for DX12. -
M$ for the most part made DX11.2 for Windows 8.1.x so that they could try and force Windows 7 gamers to look at upgrading. What this guy is referring too is the balance act. they could again direct it too windows 8.1 and beyond but then are telling developers there will be a much smaller audience.
Again it is the corporation forcing their vision(s) down our throat despite our wants and desires. They can tap dance all they want too, if it looks like a turd, feels like a turd and definitely has the stink of a turd it probably is a turd. I never thought I would say it but with all the leveraging against the consumer will I am starting to lean towards wanting to see them fail and feeling some major consumer backlash, they are listening my back side.J-Lawrence likes this. -
To go with Win 8 only for dx11.2, not worth now, in the future who knows, but a lot of people expect much form Win9 and dx12(with some kind of Mantle) in the future, M$ don't say clear anything now, to not hurt win8 sales(already too low)...

Do older games like Stalker SoC and Crysis 1 work under 8.1?
-
I'd go with windows 7 solely because the majority of games you listed were developed during Windows 7 time. I could be wrong, but my thinking is that all of those games were tested on win 7 as it was the predominant OS and therefor should be the best optimized/have the least amount of issues. Also, i hate windows 8.

With Crysis 1, Windows 8.1 64-bit can run it provided that you install as Administrator and run in compatibility mode for Vista SP2. Stalker SoC, according to Microsoft's website, is compatible.

What good is DirextX 11.x if games are running slow as heck? I thought going from XP to 7 was bad for gaming (fps dropped by double digits), going from XP to 8 was much worse (1/8th the fps I could have gotten under XP)!

I went for windows 7 but I know Micro$ will exclude windows from directx 12.0, but would it be possible for some smart hacker to make it for windows 7 too?
windows 8 worth it for directx 11.2 alone?
