Hi, i recently purchased the dv6405US with windows vista home premium. Everything was all fine, until the next day, where i would open the folder "Allen" from start button, shortly after it opens a message would pop up saying "windows has stopped working", and the windows explorer restarts.
I then chose to do a system restore, and it didn't happen again. Then later, the same thing happened when i opened up the "music" folder. crashes and windows explorer restarts. I was wondering what is going on.
Now, i have created a shortcut to the "music" folder, and when i open it, it doesnt crash. Only when i open it from the start menu.
I can still do an exchange, should i get a new notebook, or is there a solution to this issue. Thanks.

It sounds like a virus to me, thought that virus might be called Vista...
Try grabbing the free version of BitDefender and run a scan, it tends to catch things many others miss. Not as many as, say, Nod32, but it's a lot easier to deal with the free version of BD than the trial of Nod32. -
Could just be a corrupted system file.
Go to Start >> Run >> sfc /scannow
(If Start >> Run doesn't work, try the Windows Key + R.) -
This is a brand new machine, but you haven't said whether not after the machine was up and running OK what you put in those folders that are causing the trouble.
Or are they still empty
This activity typically occurs because you have a file in the folder and that the act of even viewing that file causes some add-on to activate. For example, let's say there is a video file in the folder that requires Divx...the icon preview function calls on the Divx add-on to create a preview icon/thumbnail (it must read the file with the divx add-in to render the thumbnail)
If the divx add-on is incompatible with Vista, you get the error you describe
So, what is in the folder and what have you installed to use what is in the folder.
That installed thing is causing the crash (probably) -
Thank you gerry, i never thought of that. I couldnt delete the music i had on there, so i had to use command prompt. Didnt know what to look for so i just deleted everything. the error doesnt pop up anymore, but i wished i knew what the problem actual was.

The Start menu may have display limitations different from the "normal" file browser. Microsoft has lots of random, hidden limitations. Like, you can only select something like 32,000 total characters in a multi-file-select box, unless you're using Unicode. I'd assume that it's something along those lines unless you start seeing other weird behaviors.
windows explorer crashed when i open up this 1 specific folder.
