when i logged on to my messenger i got an automated message from the windows live team that read that i had to change my windows live id, because of some type of system improvement thing. if i didn't change it they would block my messenger.

well i went to change it and i couldn't find the setting to do it, i looked around the internet and it says that it is impossible to change your id if your mail domaine is @hotmail

    any help???

I got the same message. It sounds like a virus or something. I wouldn't try changing your ID.

Sounds like some sort of phishing scam, or virus of some sort. I'd scan your system, see if anything comes up.

I just got that now, ignored it. I looked at the article that it linked to, was dated 2006, thought that if there was going to be an issue with logging in, I'd have run into it by now.

    ....

For the record, the link in the message is *real*. It points to a real Microsoft support page.

    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/Messenger/en

It is not a phishing scam, or a trojan, or a virus.

However, while the link works, the actual procedure to change the account (if one were to try) fails, saying it "can't be changed at this time." The page is real, as it is a secured site, will not authorize on a wrong password, and knows the MS "backend" stuff (ie. it knows my linked accounts and other info).

    DO NOT PANIC.

It looks like MS updated a server and must have forgot to change a setting or something. My private domain messenger account isn't doing it, and I know not everyone on hotmail.com is getting it.

Never give out your Windows Live ID, or any other screenname in an IM. Remember that these services will never ask for your screenname or password in an IM.

As for the upgrade, I only recieved a system popup (not an IM) suggesting that I upgrade. I never was prompted to change any ID's

Well this message was real... however it was just a terrible accident on the windows live team's end and should be ignored. You can read about the blunder here.
