one of our computers failed on us, and i am trying to find recovery information for windows me on microsoft.com but i can't seem to find it
anyone know where i can get a hold of a free windows me recovery cd?
-
probably through phone contact with support
-
well, the trouble is that...
torrent sources are not really safe, using them you ask for troubles with malware, -
thanks, what about windows 2000? did they remove support for that aswell? anyone know of another site on the web that still has some kind of recovery file you can download?
-
I don't think we should be talking about torrents cause they have an illegal connotation
-
windows 2000 should be supported until 13 July 2010... i'd suggest to contact Microsoft regarding the recovery CD
erwallie: sure, but very often it is not sufficient... also the risky half of it needs to be added. i mean, you'd never guess how many people are surprised that their machine got infected by a torrented mp3. um... they got what they wanted, what can one say. -

Do not discuss torrents or similar forms of obtaining software. We do not allowed that here and I have edited several posts. Thank you.

Chaz: sure thing, i'd never recommend piracy (i hoped that it was clear from what i wrote), for a reason. i rather tried to stress that it's not only the legal part of it which may cause troubles. - anyway, getting the recovery cd directly from MS is the best thing to do in this case i guess, since at least w2k is still supported.
by the way, dwd, post back how quickly they're willing to post the cd or provide other way of support, i don't guess that i'd use it personally, but i'm curious... thanks -
I'm not familiar with any "recovery CD". The W2K installation CD comes with a recovery console. It is possible to create your own recovery disc (actually, you only need a floppy that loads the low-level boot files and then switches to the %SYSTEMROOT% directory and continues loading) with the necessary files to get a broken W2K install working again. Is that what you are looking for?

You should be able to find recovery disks for old, old versions of a WinOS, but you'll have to pay a small fee for the disks (probably between US$30 to US$50).
It will in all likelihood be a third party other than Microsoft or the OEM for the system in question. Were I you, I would start with the manufacturer's support website (in any event, it's the manufacturer, not MS that supports any copy of a WinOS that was preinstalled) and see if the site has any links to a third-party source of recovery disks.
