You probably need a MPEG2 decoder which doesn't come with the stock windows XP OS.

You can use ffmpeg based codec packs, divx, xvid, or use a media player with codec built in . E.G. Kmplayer

. K-Lite codecs pack works cool with Windows Media Player

. also use VLC as an alternate/backup.

    cheers ...

windows media player probably doesnt have the necessary codec to play it.

i suggest you download VLC media player.
it is very popular, i think almost everyone that is tech-savvy uses it.

VLC contains nearly all of the codec ever made. it is a high quality program that is free (open-source).

i've downloaded both divx and kmplayer and i'm still having trouble playing dvds. when i choose the dvd in the D drive, it pulls up a folder for the dvd with a few different file in it. and if i insert the DVD, the autoplay menu only displays WMP. what should i do?

if i go into my computer and click on the DVD icon, it says "This file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action. Create an association in the folder option control panel".... so when i go into the folder option control panel, i don;t really know what to do

Interesting. Try right clicking on the DVD and selecting "Play in KM Player", or do you not have this option? Or try opening KM Player directly, right clicking in the middle of the screen and there should be an option to select the DVD or whatnot. What type of DVD are you trying to play? Could also be that DVD is corrupted.
