it is simple. i attempt to double click on a jpeg that is on my desktop and every time i do this it takes a few seconds for it to be brough up and viewed with windows picture and fax viewer under win xp. it should be instant. if the windows picture and fax viewer is already up there is no hang or delay double clicking another jpeg on desktop or in any directory. this only happens on jpegs that sit on the desktop and not in other directories so it is really confusing. windows picture and fax viewer is the default image viewer for windows xp.

Try to copy a pic from a "fast working" folder to the desktop and try again to see if any differences.

    cheers ...

The only thing comes to my mind is that it must be an issue with the user path. Try copy that file now to another folder direct under C: - this way we can eliminate for sure that the issue is with the pic (which I doubt).

    cheers ...

no it is with any jpeg that sits on the dekstop. it actually even freezes windows explorer shortly while it attempts to read the picture.

pictures that are in folders, which those folders are onto the desktop do not exhibit this symptom. if the jpeg is simply sitting onto the desktop then the problem is rears it's ugly head.

Is it only with jpeg images, or does it happen to all image types? Do you have any links or shortcuts on your desktop? Does this happen to other users on the laptop? (If you have no other users, create one, drop some images on the desktop, and see what happens.)
