I was running Server 2008 R2 for a while, primarily for Hyper-V. Now that I've switched to Windows 8, that isn't much of an issue for me (although I recently needed to switch to VMware Workstation for work purposes). To be honest, once Microsoft unified the kenerels for their server and client systems, there hasn't been much of a point unless you needed a specific feature set that is unavailable on the client (and Windows 8 runs quite light).

I use Server 2003 on my Main Server, Server 2012 on my Game Server, Server 2008 Regular and R2 on desktops and laptops. There is some software that won't work with the server OS variant but most that I can find it a Limitation put in by the developers some can be adverted but like Grand Theft Auto 4 its the only one I have no luck getting it working on server 2003 2008
