Since yesterday, Windows Update has been trying to install an update called "Update for Windows Vista (KB942763)". It is labeled as "Important".
However, after trying to install, it always fails with the error code "Code 80070643". I looked up this code in Windows Help, and it seemed related to Microsoft Office. Is the reason this failed because I don't have a Microsoft productivity suite installed?![]()
Anyways, the Windows Update icon won't go away. It remains in my system tray.![]()
If this update really is important and not just applicable to Microsoft Office, then I want to get it downloaded, but I can't.
If it is not important to me, then how can I make the bloody icon disappear?
Thanks for any help.....

Go to the MS Support site and just dl the file, then install it
And when the installation is complete and you restart your comp, it'll go away..forever and ever..well until the next one you fail to install pops up anyways.. -
Thanks for the quick answer. If it works +rep for you!
-
haha np
rep isnt what matters, it's the feeling that i was able to help someone -
Good for you. So I download the file, and it still won't install. I end a few processes with the words 'Windows' and 'Update' in them, and the accursed icon goes away! Then it's back in like 5 seconds!
Btw, a Google search reveals I'm not the only one with this problem. Maybe I'll just hide the icon and hope it manages to install the update one of these days? Hopefully before 2008? Because I found out it's an update for DST. -
lol not working from direct dl..never happened to be before..
did you try install with the file or with windows update? cause you should just install from the file :S -
The update is not related to MS Office, but it's bugged, it's trying to update Office even if you don't have it. I wouldn't worry about it, just wait till a fixed DST update becomes available.

Thanks odin. But the icon is still in my system tray - it's driving me crazy! But thanks for the advice. =^)

Can't you just turn off windows updates? That should fix it, right? Have the service not start up automatically, then reboot, and the icon should be gone.

Or you can do it the easy way and right-click the update and select hide
-
That's what I've done, not an issue for me since the country I'm in doesn't observe daylight savings.
-
I had that problem too. I found the answer on another forum and I posted it here: http://itsvista.com/2007/02/kb931712/
I hope that helps if the other things didn't -
Thanks everyone who answered! It was helpful, but the problem is I want all the updates, but I don't want Windows Update constantly running and trying to install this bloody update! I'll just wait and see how it works out, and if this continues for a long time, then I'll try SkylineGTR's solution.
