    Hey there,

My windows update has stooped working. It just says "windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

I've looked around in various forums, but was unable to find a solution. Most of the people with update problems seem to be experiencing another kind of bug, where windows explorer crashes. Me on the other hand, I just cant start it up, even after a restart.

    Thanks for any help!

Have you done any tweaking or disabled any services?

    Thanks for your reply.

I have not, unless I did something inadvertently. The update service was working just a couple of days ago...

Hopefully, I won't have to to a clean install. =\

Go to Start and in the search box type in 'Services'. Open the Services applicationand scroll down to the very bottom. You will find the Windows Update service there. Make sure it is set up to start automatically. Also start it and go to Windows Update in Control Panel again, you should be able to run updates now, if not; reboot.

Thank you so much! Ah, you just made me day. Glad I didn't have to reinstall windows, or something.

Any idea how this might have happened? Because I'm sure that I didn't fiddle around with the service.

    Thanks again.

Viruses frequently disable Windows Update in order to prevent the OS from patching. If you're sure you didn't disable it, I would run a full virus scan of everything you have in safe mode.

Yikes, thank you very much for the warning. I will do a safe mode virus scan with NOD32, when I get off work.

Windows 7 include a Windows Update repair.
Control Panel > Troubleshooting (on icon view) > then select "Fix problems with Windows Updates".

    ^

    Thanks for the heads up.

Also, I may have a virus because I just realized that I am unable to turn on Windows Security Center. It just says, the service cannot be started when I try to enable it.

Any way to turn it back on, before I do a virus scan?

    Thanks again everyone.

    Edit--

Ugh, I can't turn on action center, either. And running eset in save mode, a terminal comes up with the following:

name: "c:\hiberfil.sys", threat''' action'' info ="error opening" and just hangs there.

Try this, set your system to go back in time with Windows restore, to a date before the virus infection.

Else then that, just re-install Windows. It might semas not the best solution, but actually it is. Removing the virus is one thing, having your system at 100% running that will be a different story. The time and energy trying to remove a virus will be more than just re-install Win7.

Remember to backup your stuff first and ensure the virus is not there.

Next time, don't disable UAC, and leave it at max level, and stop doing P2P and getting P0rn ;)
