Bought an Asus G72GX bestbuy in February. After about a month, and a windows update, my WIFI card wouldn't work(wifi switch does nothing, neither does FN+F2) and I kept periodically getting BSOD's. Furthermore, about a month later, I did another update and restarted, and EVERYTHING I had saved on my desktop.... *POOF*....gone, leaving only USERNT file on my desktop. I read about this and found that I needed to copy and paste some crap from one user profile folder to another, which didn't do ANYTHING.....

Here, in October, I shut down my laptop and installed the recent windows update. The next day I went to start up my laptop and it BSOD'd. "whatever, this has happened before, I'll just restart and all will be well again.", I thought. NOPE. BSOD, restart, BSOD, restart, BSOD, restart, "repair windows?" yes. "windows files loading". BSOD. Got mad and just shut the lid on it before I got mad and chucked the thing across the living room. Calmed down and hours later, tried again. Started up......."BOOT MGR not present". damn. Threw in my restore disks, system works fine, and oh, what's this?!?! My wifi card works again!! Whatever. Guess I'll have to rebuild my massive army in my music folder again... uuuuugh! lol

A few months ago I overheard 2 geeks talking about what programs they use. One of which was a driver program that they used for all their hardware driver update needs. I downloaded it and it was RAD. It would scan everything within the Device Manager and download updates for each and every device. Since I've wiped the HDD and reinstalled, I can't remember the name of said program. Any ideas? It was called driver something, obviously. Very thorough, free, and not a scam "let me trick you into doing a free scan of your hardware, and offer to download needed drivers, only to discover that you need to register".

I've read elsewhere that people have gone so far as to shut Windows Automatic Updates OFF, and just periodically go to MS and download update manually. Well, seeing as how not EVERY windows update is detrimental to my PC, how do I know which one is going to help my pc

I deactivated automatic Windows update and update every second Thursday of the month at my command. And it works flawlessly.

You have messed up your system enough for a clean re-install of Windows 7.

Just install the important Windows Updates.

But the updates are released on the second Tuesday of every month. I don't see any flawlessness in your method.

how did I screw up my system by doing what MS suggested I do in their stupid F'ing updates for one, and two, which "important" updates are ones I KNOW won't screw my ssystem up again?

2 days later, but if there is trouble with the updates, I don't catch them.
That's worth waiting. And during this 2 days my system still runs flawless!

Quit whining and complaining about MS updates. Fact is, your system was screwed up already, otherwise you wouldn't have seen these issues. Of course, none of us has any information from you that would allow us to tell you how exactly your system was screwed up. You, or your OEM, did that all by yourself. Again, no need to blame Microsoft.

    P.S.: By the way,

Uhmm, yes, that would explain a thing or two. The "professional" way in which you handle your issues is enough to explain pretty much everything that's wrong with your system. My recommendation would be to calm down, and get professional help if/when you need it.

You might want to listen to him. MS updates do not create BSOD. BSOD is usually a hardware issue, rarely a software issue, and if it is a software issue, it is a driver issue. However, your response seems to be infantile at best, hurting your credibility. If you want to come on here and ask for answers, you should at least listen to those trying to help you. I also have used MS updates for years, and have never had any issues.

Same here, never has windows update cause problems, the issue might be related to an update, but the update is definitely not the only cause. My money is on a driver or hardware fault too.

As for your comment two posts above, sure Pirx might have been harsh, but this is no way to answer. Let's try to keep the discussion civil if possible.

Leave the important updates on, but set it to ask you for the optional ones. As a rule of thumb, i never download drivers through windows update, get them through Asus' support site or the manufacturer's website. I use windows updates for drivers like that of the xbox360 controller, my LAN controllers sometimes and printers (HP's software is way too bloated so i prefer to run on the MS drivers), but that's about it.

The only issue i ever saw with windows update was when a friend tried to update his video driver through windows update on a GeForce Go7200

it just seems funny that it was RIGHT AFTER i did an update, it royally effed stuff up. made my wifi card a turd with miniPCI teeth, deleted all my music and pictures from my desktop, then rendered my laptop unbootable. how very coincidental...
