by getting vista 64 bit, can i run older programs if i need to, or older games? or will i have to downgrade to the 32 bit, or even windows xp?

Vista 64 bit is backwards compatible with 32bit applications. The only issues you might experience are a lack of compatible drivers if you have some special hardware.

Vista64 dropped support for 16bit programs though. If you have really old games, you might not be able to play them (as in more y2k ones)

Like hehe said. The problems will arise when you hit 16 bit installers, as they are not compatible with the 64 bit OS. I have Vista 64 and love it. I can play most all my old(3 to 5 years) games on it. There were a couple of games that had the 16 bit installers and I couldn't install them and had problems getting them to work. But eventually, I found work arounds on the web.
Also beware of old hardware you might want to use. If it doesn't have a driver then that will cause issues.
