a few things are driving me crazy, I wanna F throw Vista out of the window :D

talking about windows. it used to be that when you close a window with ALT held down and click on the red X, when you re-open it, it will open with the same size. That works only until you re-boot, hibernate or I don't know if there is a time frame.

So how do I set the default window size?

another similar issue: why why oh why, I have to change every single time the spacing of the columns in the detailed view? I always make the name column bigger, but it keeps shrinking.

last thing. I was able to do this in XP but in Vista I can't. I want to ELIMINATE and PREVENT vista from showing me some folder with media content, I don't wanna see the files artists, album and all that useless information. I just want name, type, size, date for all my folders.

sorry if I sound a bit FRUSTRATED, but please help. I am sure some other people wanna chance these quirky behaviors. I already looked into the folder's settings but nothing really helps, not even "remember each folder's view setting"

    1) Explorer will remember window sizes - you don't need to do anything special. Open a window, resize it however you want. Close it. Open it again, and it'll be the same size. One particular quirk is that it's dependent on the shortcut you use to open Windows Explorer - each shortcut "remembers" the window size for the last window that was launched from that shortcut. So if you open Explorer from a link, it'll launch a window with the same size as the last Explorer window that was launched using that same link.

    2) The spacing for the columns can be set to a standard. Press [ALT] to bring up the menu, and under Tools > Folder Options > View there's an option to apply the current view to all folders (of the same "type", I believe, which is explained below).

    3) The media content stuff is customisable, too. Windows scans the folder and determines it's "type" - that is, a folder filled with music will be given a view that's suited for music, which will typically involve displaying artist, rating, etc. in detailed view. You can simply right-click on the folder, go to Properties, and under the Customise tab you can select the folder "type". Select "All Items" and you're set. You should just be able to select all the folders in your root directory, follow the above steps, and check "Apply to subfolders". All your folders should now have the type "All Items".

    1) are you talking about INTERNET EXPLORER? either way it doesn't work.

    2) this is directly related to 1. Since the window size changes I have no way of testing this.

    3) that might and that's what I have for certain folders. the problem is I wanna completely disable the function.

how is it possible that nobody else is running into these problems? I have a WXGA+ screen and these windows are tiny.

Regarding 1), I'm talking about Windows Explorer. The behaviour I described is what's supposed to happen. And it works on all the Vista installs I've dealt with. Maybe there's something wrong with your install - messed with any settings recently? Or maybe you've run one of those "system cleaner" or "system optimiser" programs that's deleted something it's not supposed to...
