Try reinstalling the fingerprint reader software. This looks like the likliest culprit.

If you don't use the fingerprint reader, does it do the same thing?

tried logging in normally same issue. Tried reinstalling fingerprint software and even trying it without any installed. same problem. I am baffled. The computer is not starting up running explorer.exe.

what version of windows are you running? You could try using sfc at the command prompt to see if anything is a miss. have you disabled something in the services.msc that could be causing this issue. I know a lot of people swear by disabling unused services in windows but you have to be very careful as some are not quite so straight forward. I take it you've tried system restore.

vista ultimate 32bit. have not altered any services but windows search. system restore did nothing. I guess i could append the startup to run explorer.exe and would never notice.
