i just got a copy of windows visa ultimate 64bit to upgrade my alienware m17x from 32bit to 64bit. It always gets stuck at the second loading bar with the green lines going across it, i let it sit for over 30 minutes and nothing happened. i can hear the DVD drive making some noises while its going. anyone now what im doing wrong or is the disc i got just bad? i bought it from newegg so im sure thats its not an illegal version or anything like that.

EDIT:also the HDD light doesn't blink at all when its on the green loading bar, it does blink on the first loading bar which only take about 2-3 minutes at the most.

This is the tipical reaction of the intel's chipset to a "first generation unlegit DVD of Vista". Since you say you bought it on newegg there shouldn't be any problem with it though. Is it a SP1 DVD?

i just tried to install it again and it got to the same place and got stuck but this time i noticed that it almost sounded like the DVD drive kept trying to start up but then stopped like it couldn't get going? It would click once then spin for like 2 sec and then stop it kept doing this over and over again. i tested it with itunes and i could rip i CD using it so i don't think this is the problem but idk?

do you already have OS ? then try installing from the OS itself or try disabling the AHCI

this maybe a tediuos method but it should give a rough idea about your DVD ...

Install a Virtual Machine ( Sun VirtualBox / MS VirtualPC ) in your present system , then try to install x64 bit version in it and see how it works

Hmmm....you already had it...why did you rebought it? You could have bought the DVD alone or getting it of the internet and use your current key...
