OK, so I'm pretty much clueless about everything computer-related, but I'm trying to learn.
I just bought a new Dell e1405 with Windows XP Home Edition. Should I still download Windows Service Pack 2, or is that unnecessary since I have (presumably) the latest version of the operating system?
Also, if I am using NOD32 antivirus program, do I even need a separate firewall?
Thanks for your help with my technological education! I'm a slow learner.

Congrats! Your new Dell should arrive with the latest Windows SP2 but there may be software patches that you should still install, i.e. virus, security patches etc...
Do you know if your NOD32 antivirus program come with their own Firewall because Windows come with their own Firewall, some on the board would advise you to use one over the other as they may conflict with each other. You should get a hardware firewall if you don't have one built into your modem/router already. -
You always need antivirus and firewall for safe browsing. You have the first but i think you need the second. I use Zonealarm - it works without a hitch, Dont forget antispyware programs like ad-aware and spybot S&D and be sure to do regular scans.
Another program i like is Spyware Blaster which blocks known sites/active x objects. Also, browse with firefox, its much safer and a lot beter than IE. -
You new e1405 will have SP2 installed, therefore there is no need to download it. But as jujube correctly said, there may be new critical updates that need to be installed by performing a manual Windows Update.
NOD32 is one of the best commercial antivirus programs currently (IMO), and it comes with a firewall, so it is not necessary to have a separate one. -
yup, nod32 is only anti-virus
One advice is to not download anything you don't know without scanning it and use good browser like firefox or opera.
