I would like to get a laptop. The cost difference of XP home pre-installed and XP pro is $100, while I could get retail XP pro upgrade with student discount cheaper than $100. If I get the XP home version, would I be able to upgrade the laptop to XP pro this way? I'm afraid some propietary drivers/files would mess things up. Anybody with this kind of experience?

    Thanks.

Yea you can, but do u need to? As a student what does XP pro have to offer that you need? The programs you get with XP pro can be bought without having to upgrade your XP home, and can be done alot easier and cheaper.

Well, I'm a student, and I'm afraid XP home would give me problems connecting to the school network. I've read from some people recommending not to upgrade using retail version since laptops have customized/propietary drivers, and therefore it's best to get xp pro from the manufacture.

Is that so? It would save me some money not having to upgrade to XP pro, even with student discount. Thanks.

For the sake of the thread, is it generally safe to upgrade a laptop with pre-installed XP home with a retail XP pro upgrade from your experience?
