Some recovery cds allow you to install individual programs after installing the OS, some don't. Personally I would just install XP home with your programs and do an upgrade rather than a fresh install to XP pro. That should preserve your existing programs.

You can just upgrade your version of windows to pro, it won't impact any of your programs or settings.

As Brian indicated, you can just upgrade your Sony's OS to XP Pro, but you're going to have to buy the upgrade as you will need a new Product Key.

Yes it is possible to upgrade without formatting the hard disk. just pop the cd into your cd drive when in windows, and it will guide you through.

Which is what the prior two posts said as well...but if you don't need pro I really wouldn't worry about it.
