    Hi folks,
Lately, i noticed that my Asus notebook's fans were running louder and idle temps were relatively high than it should be. After digging a bit using Resource Monitor and Task Manager, i found out that " svchost.exe" was consuming about %15 CPU while my Windows 7 64-bit SP1 system is idling. Svchost.exe was pointing to " wuauserv" service which was the culprit that was consuming CPU. If i stop "wuauserv", the CPU usage immediately drops to %0 or %1 and system takes a breath.

The question: I see numerous Windows Update Client releases by Microsoft but it's not clear which one is addressing that issue. I'm searching like this:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=win....1.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..3.3.153.5oDjlwII4ro

    or..

    https://www.google.com/search?q=win...0..0.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..2.0.0.ZRtQgZ56du0

    https://www.google.com/search?q=win....1.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..1.1.144.aZ3a3YhIksI

...getting unclear results. Which KB hotfix must i install or how did you deal with "wuauserv" nightmare?

Note: My Windows Update configuration setting is "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". And i had installed KB3050265 which effectively removed "memory" leak but didn't help about the cpu usage problem when system is idling.

    Thanks in advance!

Actually, i ended up setting Windows Update Service to "Manual" rather than "Automatic" which saved my CPU from being consumed about %15 when computer is idle. When i need to install any update package, i launch WU, that's all. I'm not sure whether latest WU clients have corrected this issue eventhough the WU (wuauserv) service is set to "Automatic".

I never noticed that with my Desktop or Laptop that have Windows 7x64 Ult Sp1 and latest updates. Are you sure this isn't a dirty vent and fan problem that causes the fan to speed up. If what your saying was happening - there be more reports of this happening.

OP did say 15% CPU load. That can't be from bad cooling.

    @OP
Your CPU load drops to 1% or even 0% without the update service running? That's really low for Win7 on a laptop CPU.

This tells they have cooling problems and clogged vents. I have laptops and they do this only when being used. This I know from experience and cleaning laptops.

i'm using this site to deal with the svchost issue. CLICK ME
It's in german tho, but as you can guess, just download all the patches in the first table for your OS Version e.g. x86 or x64 and download the latest Windows Update client (second table) like @Phoenix described. Then set your automatic updates to disable and restart. Then just install the patches and the latest update client and most of the time i'm done and after restart everything is smooth sailing :D afterwards again.

I can send an optimized services running file, making less services working in windows, and eliminating svchost problem with bloated ram and cpu usage.

Yep, %1 or %0, max %2 when Windows Update Service is NOT running at all. I don't have much bloating services other than Asus's built-in services like ATK. But surprisingly, eventhough i stop WUAUSERV service and set to "manual", it comes up randomly, or other MS programs brings it up into "running" state like Windows Media Player, so the problem arises again. That's weird.

If Windows Update is not running my idle temps are 56-60 degrees (celcius) and note that current ambient room temperature is 28 degrees. A steady %15 CPU usage brings the temp to 70 degrees at least, and the fans run louder as expected.
