Hello all, I recently just tried to install VMware Server, and I had several errors pop up. I included pics of them. Several "unsigned drivers" that Vista wouldn't let install.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

P.S. I'm a VMWare n00b...I'm trying to get it up so I can run XP on my machine.

Is that the beta of server 2.0, or the 1.0.4 version?

    This is 1.0.4

Do I need to run the beta for x64 goodness?

Please do so. VMware Workstation doesn't have any problems with x64.

Beta 2 installs fine and dandy in Vista x64.

...now I just have to figure out how to use the beast!

    Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey guys, I don't know if it's the v2 Beta, or just me, but I can't figure out how to operate VMWare.

The only icon it installs that looks like it might work takes my to a webpage in my browser:
    https://COMPUTERNAME:8333/ui/

    No vmware.exe link.

I found the .exe folder in the program files(x86) folder and ran it, chose Local Host and then I get the error in my attached .jpg.

I tried asking my buddy that runs VMWare and no luck there. I really have no clue what I'm doing, so if anyone has a minute or feels like helping me out, that would be sweet.

    Thanks!

I've tried the VMWare Server 2.0 BETA on Vista x64 and so far no good. It doesn't let me login at all so I can't even properly test it out...

They also replaced the VMWare Management app with a web console which isn't well recieved either...

Man, if it requires the F8 + boot shenanigans, it might be more trouble than it's worth.

I think I might just use Virtual PC...blegh0rz.

Hopefully VMWare gets their act together. Thanks for the help amigos.

VMware workstation works great... you can try out an evaluation from them I think. Server is an issue right now just because it is a beta, once released, these things should be worked out.

A free alternative is Virtual Box, but I'm not sure the status on 64bit Vista.

VMWare has one thing that is really worth it though...USB passthrough.

Use VMWare Workstation/Server to create the VM (use the free trial), integrate the VMWare Tools into the guest OS, and then just use VMWare Player to use the OS.

    Greg,

First off, what is USB passthrough? (letting your VM see the USB?)

Second, Using VMWare workstation free trial, is it time limited? or feature limited?

...or do you simply use the trial to get to the point where you can use the player, and then you don't need the Workstation trial anymore? (I'm really out of the loop here)

All I want to do is simple things with XP, like printing on campus (drivers don't work in Vista x64) and the occasional program that is outdated for Vista (Photoshop Elements 3).

Just in case anyone is following this thread for answers in real-time, I struggled with Virtual, but in less than 10 minutes I downloaded, installed, and began the installation of XP virtually with VirtualBox, and it is fully supported on x64 based systems.

I'll let you know how it turns out!

    P.S. Thanks again orev!

You can directly connect any USB device to the virtual machine. And VMware Workstation is not free.

If you just want to run XP, VMWARE Workstation will do the job, and may be a more hassle-free start for a "noob", like you say.

VMWARE allows you to use the USB on the VM, unlike Microsoft's product. How important? Try using a computer without access to your USB devices.

    Regards,
    Paolo

    Virtual Box allows USB!

From what I've read it can be a bit buggy at times depending on what you are trying to do, but like I said, I do not plan on doing anything too crazy or extensive.

I'm going to stick with Virtual Box for now.
