by clicking on the button it will activate your copy of windows, follow the prompts. if it fails to activate you may be using pirated software

I have ran into that before.

Boot into "Safe Mode" by pressing F8 during a reboot.

Go to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 regwizc.dll , and hit enter.
Then go again to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 licdll.dll , and hit enter again.

By hardware do you mean motherboard?

I reinstalled windows with the original hard drive with no problems. Since that time I'm cloned two new (bigger) hard drives, also without problems. If I were to try and reinstall windows with the latest hard drive using the CD would I be able to?

Just changing the hdd won't cause your system to be no longer recognized as the "correct" system. MS uses a "recognition" algorithm that uses several values derived from a number of different components, including the NIC (which is given the greatest amount of weight in the algorithm) - in effect, each chosen component gets a weighted "vote" as to whether or not the system is still the same. Once a component is changed, it can no longer vote "yes;" however, any further changes to that same component will not make things any worse - once the "vote" from the hdd is gone, changing hdds as many times as you like will not cause the OS to start thinking it's on a different system. Changing the hdd and the NIC may, however.

Network Interface Card - it's shorthand for your ethernet adapter and/or your wireless adapter.
