I believe you have to have XP Media Center Edition.

You can use the Windows Media Connect software to connect an XBOX 360 to any pc running XP SP2 Home or Pro. Note that this isn't the same as Windows Media Extender for XBOX 360-That's for XP MCE and Vista Home Premium/Ultimate only.

    From the XBOX 360 Manual:

    Windows Media Connect

Windows Media Connect enables your Xbox
360 console to stream music and pictures
stored on your Windows XP–based computer
anywhere in your home. View slide shows on
your TV, and create playlists to play all your
music through the same sound system
connected to your Xbox 360 console through
a digital audio receiver. To learn more about
    Windows Media Connect, go to
    www.xbox.com/media.

    To setup Windows Media Connect:

    1 Go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup and
    download the Windows Media Connect
software to your PC that is running an upto-
date version of Windows XP SP2.

2 Connect your Xbox 360 console to your PC
using one of the networks described earlier
in this manual in “Connect to Xbox Live.”

    Good Luck :)

i have media center but i don't actually use it for my 360. all i did was share my drive over the network, then add the songs to windows media player, go onto the xbox and select the drive i shared and my music was all there.

Well you can use Media connect OR without using Media connect, just put the files you want to stream in the default shared folders (like Videos, Music, etc) under your user name and from 360 go to either Videos/Music/Pictures and select the source from PC.

I stress using the default shared folders, because I myself could not stream from any other folder that gave permission to be shared.
