A large majority of updates (about 80 major ones or so that have built up since SP2 was released) are security related. Security helps to prevent trouble, which in turns helps to keep your laptop tuned up. If I were you, set it to download and install overnight if the connection is too slow.

how big are they altogether about?
-
maybe about 100-200 megs. I would install the updates, a lot of them relate to security holes in Windows XP that have been exploited before.

thats not too bad. but i dont care bout security anywayz

Just use AutopatcherXP.
It will install all updates/hotfixes to date, in one streamlined installer. Also things like flash, java, tweakUI, etc, as well as some registry tweaks (everything is optional of course). Saves a ton of time.
