I see that even the 14" new Dell Latitudes has an option for a 1600x900 Anti-Glare LED-backlit with Premium Panel Guarantee, does this mean that we finally can get a good screen on a 14", or is it just Dell marketing?

    Any thoughts?

The 14.0" 1600x900 display for the E6420 has the same specs as the 14.1" 1440x900 display optional on the E6400/E6410. The display on my E6400 is described as- " 14.1" UltraSharp WXGA+(1440x900) Anti-Glare LED with Premium Panel Guarantee" and I've been VERY pleased with it! Despite more than two years of heavy use, the display still looks as good as it did new!

    It's interesting that you mention that....I purchased my E6400 in 2/2009 to replace a four-month-old ThinkPad R61!

I ordered a 14.1" R61 back in October 2008 to replace my worn out Toshiba Satellite Pro. The R61 came in two sizes- 14.1" and 15.4" and they were very different from each other. The 15.4" R61 was bulky, plasticky and lacked any protection for the display/lid against damage. But a little know secrete was that the 14.1" version of the R61 was literally identical to the 14.1" T61. The base was made out of magnesium alloy and the lid/display backing was carbon-fiber reinforced plastic. But the BIG selling point was the inclusion of the "ThinkPad Roll Cage" in the 14.1" models, which protected the base AND the display....

I customized it to my specs and, even after applying my cousin's Employee Discount (IBM Employees still get an Employee Discount), my R61 cost $1285!!! The same size T61 with identical specs would have been more than $1400, so I was happy with the deal I got and prepared to wait for the 4-5 weeks to manufacture and ship it. When it arrived just over three weeks later, I couldn't wait to start using it. When I powered it up for the first time, I began looking for the brightness control because it looked too dim...but it was already set on the maximum brightness! I tried too acclimate to it, but after four months I finally snapped and listed it for sale here on NBR. I sold it the next day, but made sure that the buyer understood that I was unhappy with the display. HE bought it for $950 and was still loving it last fall when I ran into him online.

I immediately bought a refurbished E6400 and it turned out to be a very early production unit. The 14.1" display came in standard 1280x800 or higher res 1440x900 and both were supposed to be LED-backlit....but my early production unit had a CCFL-backlit version of the lower resolution display and it SUCKED almost as basd as the ThinkPad!

I sent it back to the Outlet and went ahead and ordered another one with the 1440x900 high-res display an called to confirm that it definitely was LED-backlit, which they assured me it was. When I fired it up for the first time, I was amazed at how bright and clear the images were, despite beignn anti-glare! I eventually learned that that the E6400 WXGA+ display has a max brightness rating of 300nits. In comparison, the ThinkPad R61 display was only 180nits and the first E6400 was 200nits! The 1440x900 upgrade on the E6410 and the 1600x900 upgrade on the E6420 have continued with the 300nit rating! Very few competitors, if any, use displays rated any higher than 220nits...but I'm glad that Dell has continued to offer them!

I wasn't planning on doing it this soon, but I have no will power- I ordered my new E6420 earlier today!!! =) :D ;)

I'm also interested in buying a laptop with a good quality anti-glare screen.

My first option is the Latitude E5520 with a "15.6" UltraSharp FHD(1920x1080) Wide View Anti-Glare LED-backlit with Premium Panel Guarantee" display. For what you say it is a good quality display.

My other option is a Lenovo L520 with a "15.6" HD+ (1600 x 900) LED Backlit Anti-Glare" display. I wonder how good is that display and how does it compare to the former.

    Which one would you recommend?

    Greetings.

P.S. In case you are tempted to suggest it, I can't afford the T520 model with FHD screen (prices in Spain are a shame) :)
