Not sure what is causing this. Maybe someone else who had this issue and solved it can help me out. This is NOT the same as the crackling issue (which is solved by the Intel Matrix Controller drivers).

I am running Vista Business using the IDT drivers from Dell website. No other software from Dell installed other than the Matrix Controller driver. I am playing in Winamp. But notice it happens in WMP also.

CPU is not stressed at all. I am running on the High Performance profile (clock shouldn't be modulated).

    Any ideas?

Try uninstalling the IDT driver and using the one built into Windows.

I have gone this route before. But then I lose the function of the Mic/Input jack on the right side :\

For the sake of testing I may try the built-in to see if it skips though...

Hopefully there are some other suggestions before I do this.

Really? Mine works fine. I've converted a few LPs to mp3 with it.

Right click on the volume icon in the taskbar and select "Recording devices". Make sure nothing is disabled.

The problem is, its a Dell.

Every Dell laptop I've ever used cannot handle simple mp3 playback, be it XP/Vista32/Vista64.

And I'm still trying to find a 'solution'....

My E6400 has no audio problems except for the tweeters they call speakers.

I have uninstalled the IDT drivers and are using the default Vista installed HD audio drivers now. Same problem.

I am also trying an external USB audio card through a stereo and it is also skipping which leads me to believe something else is causing it.

No load on the computer. Maybe some sort of CPU throttling is causing it? Any way to see if the CPU is being throttled?

I have been slowly going through that thread since it is pretty big. Though your issue seems a little different. I get the skipping just booting up, logging in, starting Winamp, and then just letting it sit and play music only.

I just upgraded from BIOS A05 to A09 and so far I have not heard any skipping at all. I wonder if it was BIOS related?

Anyone know where I might find BIOS changelogs for comparing A05 and A09 (and all the changes in between)?

EDIT: Spoke to soon. Still skipping.

dell device drivers can cause high latency which make audio recording/playback a problem for some...
    get the Latency checker here
    http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
minimal drivers with XP seems to work best on my E6400,actually Windows 7 is working well too,as long as I disable my wifi driver before using laptop for audio applications.
    Good Luck!
