I know there are a lot of variations on Ebay, any that are especially good / bad?

So far, I haven't seen a single one with the latching mechanism of the Newmodeus caddy?

Correct... You can always hack an E series CD/DVD player slim drive and just stick a HDD in the casing, but that takes some work. ;)

These eBay solutions are "OK" and do offer a hole for the retainer screw on the bottom of the drive bay so that section does serve a purpose if you do not mind being without the pop out ejector arm.

Would this work on the E6420 as well?

The E6420 and E6520 use a different base cover so the media bay is a little deeper. Thus, you could not use the eBay offerings without removing the bezel and that defeats the purpose as you would have an ugly open section in that area. For these newer E series laptops, I suggest investing in the NewmodeUS.com caddy, which is proper even if it is expensive.
