I would look for a genuine / original Dell battery on ebay from a seller with lots of good feedback.

I second what John said. 3rd party batteries always have faster charge wear and always die early, and good luck getting support for those.

Will Dell support a battery purchased off eBay?

Not with the unit as a whole no. No idea how Dell would keep track of that. Dell is pretty lenient about batteries in my experience. Now if it's used, I highly doubt it, but new you might have a chance, just keep that receipt/invoice.

So, good luck getting support from Dell, too, then.

My recent (<3 years) is that batteries usually to last much better than those that were a bit older. Based on my previous experience I took out an extended battery warranty when I bought my E6400. However, the wear was only about 10% after 2 years.

It is an interesting point, however, about who provides warranty for a Dell battery bought from an ebay reseller. I don't know if the unique battery ID for Dell's batteries goes into a database when would enable Dell to check when the battery was made.

Dell AC adapters and batteries have a 20-23 digit PPID number (kinda like a serial number). I don't know whether or not Dell uses this to keep track of the warranty status, but whenever we do a service request for an AC adapter or battery we must provide this.
