    hello!

first of all i wanted to thank the community for providing so much valuable info here.
and now i come with one rather serious question of mine:

i have a good offer to buy high spec M6300 but with dead vga. the laptop works with integrated vga(how big actually is the memory??) now, it runs great actually, except 3D and games, of course.
i really could not find any info about my case, so i want to ask is it any good to buy this laptop and keep running on built in vga, just for home use- internet, text, movies, some PS too. is it common, that vga dies for M6300? i see it is possible to buy FX1600 seperately and upgrade later.
but is it any worth? im just afraid that something else might break, or no worries?

    thanks in advance!

What do you mean by "dead VGA"? Is the VGA port broken (which wouldn't make a difference if you don't use an external monitor), or is the graphics card not working? The laptop does not have integrated graphics.

How exactly is it "running off integrated VGA"? There shouldn't be any integrated VGA in an M6300... once the discrete card goes, it's gone. And yes, it's a very common issue with any Nvidia GPU of the same age.

M6300 has DVI-D and VGA ports on the back. Find out if both are dead. If the DVI-D works, get a VGA adapter for it.

Actually what may be happening is the video card is failing or has failed. Usually when these nvidia cards go, they will boot into Windows and run for a while before running into errors. If you run a 3D application or game, the card will crash the machine fairly quickly.

Either they are naive enough to think the VGA card is separate and works fine, or they are trying to be deceptive in selling you a machine that they know needs a new video card.

You would not be able to watch movies on the machine if the video card is in the process of failing.

I am not sure of which cards have issues. My Quadro FX 3600M has been trouble free for almost 3 years now.

    thanks for replies!

the case is not with any of ports, but with the GPU itself. it is just not working. sorry that i dont know weather it is fx3600 or 1600. i also found it weird the laptop was running well(not 3d and hd movies) without it( isnt there built in video chip on motherboard?).
i am not going to need new vga soon as it runs 2d cad, illustrator and LR just fine even without video card. it would be a home laptop for everyday use.
in any case- can this failure also damage something else- like some pins or whatever the vga is connected to MB?

ok maybe im going too deep, but the question is still open- should i take it or there will be more problems in future and it will be just a waste of money?

I would just stay away from that system, it just doesn't sound right. I would check for used D620 or D630 (with Intel graphics) or maybe search the Dell Outlet for E6400 or E6500.
