I believe the drives are interchangeable, but i'm talking about switching them without 'cleaning' them

I am writing this on a dell c810, but have a c840 on the way i bought on ebay

can i just swap without erasing them to avoid re-installing everything, or will i run into trouble with drivers if there is any varriation with in hardware between the 2 laptops?

You can try it, but it probably won't work. C810 is Pentium III and C840 is Pentium 4... which are, I think, different enough that whatever OS you got on there will choke. C800 to C810 might have worked.
