I've bought E6400 equipped with Seagate hard drive 250GB 7200rpm, model ST9250410ASG (free fall sensor). Unfortunetly this hdd has a "clicking noise" problem.
I've seen new firmware update on dell's support page, but it's not for this model. Is there any way to get rid of clicking?

Have you tried hdparm , the clicking is caused by the hdd parking it`s heads in power save mode.

hdparm disabled the power save so you dont get the clicking noise , see link below, only 32bit unless they run in 64bit dont know.

I've had a similar problem with one of these drives, and unfortunately, it definitely was not just power savings. Regardless, one shouldn't need a special utility e.g. hdparm to change things, and any regular clicking is not good for the drive and will reduce its time before failure. You should look at getting it replaced. If you're already out-of-warranty with Dell, you may still be able to get it replaced through Seagate.

There are some acoustic management options in the Dell BIOS. Try the different settings.

I've tried BIOS settings, but it doesn't work at all (performance mode now). It doesn't seem to be power savings...maybe free fall sensor?
I'll see if hdparm will do the job...

Check in the Dell general forum. I had the same issue and found the fix in there. I had to dl something from Dell, but it did fix the problem.

Thanks, but there is no fix for particulary this hdd model. Only what I found is
"A field firmware update package is in development that will be available in early December".

No, I haven't call yet. I don't want hdd to be replaced with blank one...a lot of stuff installed, configured and important work in progress...
