I put in a quad 2920XM ES in place of my dual core 2620M.

The main reason wasnt performance but to be able to use more memory though performance on Passmark doubled. :)

    I was running 2 4GB modules previously.

What I found: The laptop wouldnt post. I would get the blinking lights which diagnosed it as a memory issue so I pulled Bay B and it booted but with only half the memory. I decided to try the modules(since I knew they were good) in bay C or D.

It would boot in Bay C and show all 8GBs but the ram was in single channel mode.

BIOS showed I had the modules in the correct bays(A & C) but other tools like CPUZ showed them in 1 & 2. It could be they just see the module #1 and module #2 no matter where they are in the bays.

Is there anything I would need to do to enable all 4 bays?

Any ideas on this other than a defective CPU?

    Thanks!
    -RX

Follow up on this. I confirmed with Dell chat that it wouldn't void my warranty to do this but they said I should keep the original CPU as they wouldnt cover the new one(as I'd expect) and they say I shouldn't need any bios updates or anything. Maybe it truly is just a defective CPU.

Could be a defective memory controller on the actual CPU. I would RMA it for another one.

Check the BIOS error log for heat temp on CPU. Self application on the Thermal paste can be quite tricky. It's easier to persuade Dell to send you a new CPU heat-sink that has factory pre-applied thermal paste.

I agree it could be a faulty CPU. My 2820 is a QS chip and I have had zero problems with it since I installed it.

This should have worked. I have swapped a 2620m to 2720qm with zero issues.

All 4 slots then worked with 4 sticks of identical ram.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the ram slots got damaged when they removed the plastic piece that covers the slots under the keyboard.

Also the possibility that the chip or motherboard was damaged.
