Well, i took my D520 apart to give it a clean... And then it hit me to add a dust filter on the fan so it does not get dusty. I had a OEM speaker out of my Taurus, and that has this very thin cloth like material covering the speaker for what ever reason.(might just look nicer then seeing the speaker) I cut a little square out, and then placed it under the fan. The fan holds the filter nicely, and it does not take away from the cooling.. And now for the pictures.

    The Filter.

are you sure that's a good idea?
it looks like it's going to be a hot laptop when the filter is full with dust particles all over..
then you'll have to take it apart again just to clean the filter .. just my 2cents :D

The pictures that you see where taken before i cleaned it.... So it did not get that dusty to begin with.. I dont think it will ever get to the dusty point that it will make the computer over heat or anything. Right now i am at 95F, and the room is at 72F. under load, it goes up to 120-149F If it does, then i will take the computer apart, and clean it, then reply to this thread. :D I like the slight added protection of having no lint or anything getting stuck in the fan. It happened once already. :O

My desktop (Dell Optiplex 745) had been having problems with dust after I relocated it onto carpet. I tried cutting out a coffee filter and placing it in front the system fan, but it increased the system temperature by about 20F, so I had to remove it. Are you sure your D520's temperatures haven't increased?

    Maybe I need a K&N...

@Robin the coffee filter is probably too thick for air to flow easily, thus an increase of 20F
btw doesn't the Optiplex 745 have only one system fan in the back? isn't that fan an exhaust fan? no need for a filter if it's an exhaust

@OP good job on the work, just make sure that the filter you placed isn't too thick to the point that air doesn't move easily between it
also it doesn't matter if your laptop doesn't get dusty or not. safe thing to do is to clean the cover every two weeks to a month or even every two months depending on how much dust forms

we wouldn't want you to overheat your computer.

No, the 745 has a BTX chasses, so the fan is in the front and pushes air through the system. I'm still thinking of ideas for a filter...my laptop is usually fine because I always use it on a solid surface, it's just my desktop that is having dust problems.

haha... well, i got the other hard drive today in that mail, and also the WinVista Disk... I had to do it, so i installed the new hard drive with vista on it. It works great btw on the D520. For what i do, forums, youtube, and mail, word, and aim, it runs smooth.. So anyways i'm on it for a full hr updating windows, like 68 updates, and i thought to see the temps, downloaded and installed I8KFAN and seen the temps were around 160F and CPU was at 90 to 100% for the last 45 mins.. I thought maybe that the filter was making run hotter, so i took it out... Now i have to install it again. I took it out, and it make no difference in temps.....

Hmm, that is rather high for a system with integrated graphics. My D620 is idling at 10% CPU usage at 125F right now, and it's got a T7600 and Nvidia graphics in it...

heck why not use an a/c filter? this is if you want to waste the money in doing so
