I recently purchased a refurbished D630 and installed Windows 7 on it. The display driver keeps getting TDR Errors and sometimes recovering but other times crashing the computer.

    Specs:
    D630
    14.1 WXGA+
    Intel X3100
    Intel X25-M G2 80GB
    Bios A17

    Symptoms:
    1) Random Black Screen Flashes
    2) Cluster of flashes resulting in TDR Error message
    3) Freezing when left for long periods of time operating

    Triggers:
    1) Vista Aero Effects
    2) UAC Prompts
    3) Switching from AC to Battery or reverse

    Steps to troubleshoot:
    1) Tried newest intel Win7 driver
    2) Tried dells vista driver
    3) Tried the Windows WDDM 1.1 Driver
    4) SFC /scannow
    5) Ran a dell diagnostic cd and found nothing wrong
    6) Ran the memory test and found nothing wrong
    7) Tried to run furmark but the X3100 doesn't support Opengl2.0 on WDDM driver?
    8) Trying a reinstall to see if that fixes the issue

Has anyone else had issues like this? Everything seems to be pointing to a hardware problem. :(

Update: Running Furmark with intel drivers produces a display adapter crash with any version of the intel driver.

The furry donut also changes different colors as well as shows many odd artifacts.

Can anyone do a furmark on their D630 with intel X3100? Thanks

Have you tried a different driver? Try Dell's driver, as well as the latest Intel driver. It's kind of difficult for integrated graphics to have a hardware problem as, well, it's not a discrete chip...

Between two operating systems I have tried. None of them are completely stable and the time to reproduce crashes varies from driver to driver. Vista seemed a bit more stable but that was with aero turned off.

    Latest WDDM driver
    Dell's latest driver
    Stock Intel driver
    Intel's latest driver

What are the temperatures like when this happen? You can use something like HWMonitor.

Everything under 50 C so quite low.

It seems that there is a power issue as the easiest way to reproduce is by unplugging and replugging AC. Regardless if on battery or on AC it will crash sometimes to.

There are plenty of reports of Dell's diagnostics (BIOS and extended) not detecting hardware problems.

I've no idea how they process and test refurbished product, but there are many users on this forum reporting problems with product purchased from the outlet. My own experiences with the outlet this year have been horrible. The items I purchased had major defects which were easy to detect. All product was eventually returned.

Given the symptoms, I would have returned the laptop. If I had loads of time to waste, I might have:

    > Removed and/or disconnected any separately purchased hardware (e.g. expansion RAM, USB attached peripherals), if any.

    > Reinstalled the operating system with a minimum set of drivers only; no Dell Control Point and no applications.

    > Exercised it, in an attempt to get another fail.

It seems like you have done this and it fails. Most likely a hardware failure.

I'm pretty sure it must be an oddball hardware issue. Guess Ill try my luck on another machine.
