my d630 refuses to charge with a 90w power brick, it stays on, but the battery doesn't charge and i get the power warning screen after the bios screen. does this need a 65W adapter or is there something wrong with my 90W one?

Using the 65W adaptor is not the fix: The computer will be happy with any PSU above the minimum rating.

Is the battery still healthy? What happens when you use the indicator lights on the battery? See the instructions here.

The problem is that the computer is not recognising the PSU as a Dell adapter.

This can be caused by the following:

    A faulty PSU.

Faulty or non usual mains power. (I've seen this when I've used my Dell laptops in environments where the mains power is provided via a 3 phase supply that is recitified on site and also where a diesal generator is used to provide the power)

A reasonably high power (or low powered but close by) transmitter (I've seen this at home where my son has a digital baby monitor and if the transmitter is near to the PSU then the laptop doesn't recognise the PSU and thus doesn't charge).

Is the AC adapter Dell OEM?

Try unplugging and replugging it in. Also check the connector to see if it has dirty contacts or dust inside.

And there should be a centre pin in the plug which goes into the notebook. This pin carries a signal which identifies the PSU power rating. If the pin is broken then the BIOS assumes that the PSU has limited power capacity.
