    Hi D830 Win7 Users,

does anybody know how to get the Windows 7 built-in screen brightness control to work with the D830?

Manual brightness control via FN+Up/Down works perfect, but Windows 7 does not offer software brightness control in energy options.

My second notebook (5 years old Toshiba) offers this (you will see a brightness slider when clicking on the battery/energy symbol in system tray).
As a result Windows is dimming (not turning off) the display automatically after a few minutes idle time.
System is Latidtude D830 with Intel onboard graphics and 1680x1050 screen.

Maybe someone knows the magic trick (driver) to support this feature.

    Thanks

Well, I don't know about the D830, but for my M6400 the ALS driver is included with Dell's ControlPoint software. In order to get the driver you need to install that, but I _think_ if you really hate ControlPoint, you can uninstall it and it will leave the driver on the machine. You can then use Win7's built-in Adaptive Brightness setting in Power Options.

P.S.: At least on two M6400's that I have seen, the light sensor handling seems to be flaky. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Adaptive brightness works in my D630 with Windows 7. I just installed Dell Quickset and enabled the feature in the Bios options.

    Thanks for your tips,

unfortunately non of them worked for me.

The light sensor does his job in battery mode after Quickset installation, but my system is still missing the dimming feature.

The following MS document describes it with some sreenshots:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/pnppwr/powermgmt/BrightnessCtrl.mspx

On page 6 figure 2 you will see the "dim the display" feature.

    Thanks
