I recently purchased a D830 with Intel graphics that would not boot.
Removed the DIMM memory under the keyboard and it boots to CMOS.
The same 2 GB DIMM works in the bottom slot, and another 1 GB DIMM
does not work in the top slot. It seems that one slot is bad otherwise it
seems to run fine with just one DIMM installed.

I notice that the fan never runs and I'd expect it to run at startup and while
in the CMOS setup screen but I don't get any sort of fan error.

BIOS is A11 if that matters at all.

I bought the unit since the price was good even for just the 4GB of RAM.
It is actually very clean and is probably worth fixing for my kids to use.

I'm wondering if it ran for some time with no fan and overheated the Northbridge
Memory controller, perhaps some solder joints are bad to the second RAM
slot. I'll try cleaning the slot next.

Just wanted to confirm that the fan should run at boot and ask for any ideas
about the DIMM slot. I'm going to open it further to remove the fan and check
the connector. Are fan failures reported?

I think the fan may or may not run in BIOS depending on what BIOS version you have. The best way to test if the fan is working is just to load the CPU and watch the temps.

Thanks, I've not loaded the OS yet since I didn't want to overheat it. I might start
the load and see if the fan comes on.

I just threw in a disk drive with Win7 64B installed from a much newer HP laptop
expecting to have to reformat and reinstall and it just booted, LOL! Even found
the ICH8 drivers and installed them. Lots more drivers loading and reporting that
it is not a genuine copy of Win7 as expected.

    FAN CAME ON! Thanks!
