    Hey yall,

Came across this thread D830 motherboard compatible with D820 laptop? and am facing the very same problem at the moment: video card died in my D820 so would like to change mobo from D830.

Someone has most likely done this already thus I would really really like to know what his experience was. Was not able to PM him or reply to that thread so opened another one.

    Basically my concerns are:

Will I only have to change base and mobo? I can reuse keyboard, cooling assembly (both mobos have nvidia graphics), etc? Thank you in advance

You will need a new CPU (D820 uses socket M, D830 uses socket P), which makes it uneconomical. You might as well get a D820 motherboard with Intel graphics.

Thanks a lot for your advice. You saved a lot of money...

I will then order just the same mobo i use to have so that I would not have to get a cooling assembly. Strangely enough they still have new d820 mobos on ebay!

You don't want to order the same motherboard as it will have the Nvidia chip which unfortunately there is no permanent fix. P/N for the Intel GMA 950 motherboard is FF096.

And what about copper shims? Are they any good?

And since I am being annoying anyway, does the problem d820 has with nvidia chips was also inhereted by d830? Or is it safe to upgrade to d830 with nvidia graphics?

    Thanks in advance.

No G72M/G84M/G86M cores are any good. They will all fail eventually. The problem is cheapo substrate material in the GPU package which under constant heating and cooling will cause the solder joints to fail, disconnecting the GPU from the motherboard resulting in loss of video or artifacts.

Get the Intel graphics or get a new laptop.

D620/D630/D820/D830 as well as the M6300 and M65 are all affected by the chips.

So I've decided to go for new mobo + base + processor. Do i need anything else to upgrade my d820 to 830?

I don't see how that could be economical...but, you did get a board with Intel graphics though, right?

Actually I think it's opposite, a D820 with socket M processors and their Core 2 are a premium for older Meroms whereas D830 uses socket P processors and you get access to Penryn..
