So, my vostro 1500 was working fine, it decided to not boot up randomly. when i press the power button, the power led comes on, followed by the hdd led, and the power led stays on . The lcd does not power on. Tried booting using only the battery, same. the power adapter, same. took the notebook apart, reseated the processor, heatsink, ram, and all the connectors, still no luck. tried replacing the ram with my other laptop, same. the hdd works on my other laptop, so i dont know what the exact problem is. This occured once last time, but it booted up fine after 2-3 tries, now it just wont boot on. tried connecting an external monitor, still no life. anything else i could try? and i rule out the faulty 8600 chipset, as i never overclocked my laptop, and always used thermal paste every 6~ months. would really appreciate some help, as im typing this on an ancient hp pavilion ze series, which still works after all these years :( thanks a lot

It sounds like the GPU died. You cannot rule out the 8600 chipset just because you did not overclock it. Those beasts were known to fail regardless of how often they were used or how hard they were pushed.

They only other thing I can suggest is unplug the battery and power, and hold the power button down for 30-60 seconds. Sometimes capacitors in the mainboard retain a charge and cause things to go haywire when booting up.

hey greg, i already did that, still the same. im just wondering how it died on me randomly, as my temps always used to be around 44-45degrees(cpu),50-55deg(gpu).and its winter:( so replacing the motherboard is my only option? any way i can check if the 8600 really died?
also, is there any way i can remove the hdd password? i tried booting on my other laptop with my hdd, it just says wrong password even when im entering my old, correct password :(

The Go 7900 GS in my old Inspiron E1705 also just started acting up all of a sudden, despite there being no major spike in temperatures, so it can happen.

If it turns out it is GPU related I would not replace it or the motherboard unless it's still under warranty. Instead, I would invest in a new computer. Laptops these days are dirt cheap and the 8600 is a ticking time bomb anyways.

That sucks. I've got about 250 days left on my Vostro 1500's 3 year warranty. Maybe I should run this thing constantly and loop 3dMark or something to make my 8600M fail so I can get it replaced under warranty.

As far as I know Dell extended the warranty for defects based on 8x00 graphics cards to three years. Nvidia has to pay for the costs that occur since it's a soldering fault based on their chips.

Call the Dell support and see what happens....
