Just bought a E6520 from Dell outlet, it was about 40% less than W520 or T520 (with DOS, affinity, Amex discount) for same config.

E6520 probably is lower quality than Thinkpad T/W series, but it's good enough for me due to 40% lower price, for me and most people price is the most important factor, this probably explains why dell might be using cheaper parts/design.

    Edit: proof..

    E6520 Refurb
    15.6 FHD (60% gamut), 2720QM, 8GB, 250GB, NVIDIA 4200M, 6205 Wifi, Win 7 Pro, 9 cell. $840 with tax

    W520
15.6 FHD (95% gamut), 2720QM, 4GB, 320GB, NVIDIA 1000M 2GB, 6205 Wifi, DOS, 720p Webcam, 9 cell. ~$1400 with tax. (affinity + Amex discount included). Refurb are expensive than this.

Although T and W series are workstation class, E6520 and T/W series both pass similar mil spec testing. T-Series is almost the same price as W once you go to 15.6 with Quad core.
