I have a dell E6400 but want to get a core i5 processor in it. My only option is to change motherboards. Does anyone know if the E6410 motherboards will fit? It's the same computer, just the next cpu upgrade from mine.

You do not think that after buying a motherboard, cpu, and new ram that it will be cheaper then just buying a E6410 in itself?

I doubt if it will fit. If you open up both the E6400 and E6410 there are noticeable differences in the internal layout of the chassis and the cooling system, even if the ports and card slots are in the same places.

if you ask this question, aside from the fact that it's doable or not (which is not), I doubt that you would be able to do it. no offense.

All in all, you will be better off getting an E6410 from the Dell Outlet.

The differences are minor and it's definately doable, but it will be uneconomical. To convince you why, here's what you'll need to do:

You will need at least the following: motherboard, base, access cover (E6400 may work, but E6410 has more vents), palmrest (E6400 may work, but will not line up with base), and right speaker grille (and fingerprint reader or fingerprint reader cover). Since the corners on the E6410 are rounder, your E6400 LCD assembly won't match up with the base and palmrest, so to finish the job, you'll need a LCD cover and bezel as well. If you don't have an LED screen in your E6400, you'll also need a new LCD. Of course, you'll also need a new CPU and DDR3 RAM as well.

    Yup.

I spent a good amount of time with an E6410 checking if I could use any E6410 parts on my E6400 (particularily, the silver LCD back cover, palmrest with LCD latch stopper, and the LCD bezel, which has bumpers) and ultimately concluded that it was either going to be a full housing swap or nothing. :(
