    Greetings;
    I recently purchased a good Sony DVD+/-RW (DW-Q58A) and loaded it into the CD/DVD bay of my laptop. On startup, the computer found it, correctly identified it and told me the unit is working properly. However it does not read or write CD's or read or write DVD's. When accessed from My Computer with any written DVD or CD in the tray, it interprets the media as blank.

    I have uninstalled and rebooted numerous times without success and I am told the correct driver is installed when I look for an upgraded one.

    It appears I have missed a step or two in the attempted upgrade to DVD r/w capability from the stock CD/DVD unit.

    I will appreciate any technical assistance you can give me. My computer technical savvy amounts to plugging it in and two-finger typing.

    Hi All;
    I am replying to my own thread because I've not received any suggestions at this point.

    Can anyone help me with this issue?

    Does the disk work in another computer? If so, the drive is probably dead.

    Thanks for the response, Robin24k.

    The disk is fine and works in other drives. I tried this with both CD's and DVD's that are not recognized by the RW DVD now plugged into my Latitude
    D600. It is like the D600 doesn't know what to do with the new drive, although the BIOS recognized it.

    The drive is fine too - it came out of a Latitude 620 that was being relegated to the task of doorstop. Before being "set aside", (a company machine) I was given the RW DVD unit that came with the machine.

    I simply removed my working CD-DVD unit (no DVD burn capability) and plugged in the RW DVD unit assuming it would "plug-and-play".

    It didn't and I don't know how to proceed from here.

    I am technologically challenged.

    1. Did you check that it could read / write in the D620?
    2. Will the drive read pre-recorded music CD and pre--recorded movie DVDs?
    3. What burning software are you using?

    The latest Dell firmware update for that burner is here. You could give it a try.
