    Hi Guy's,

    First post,

    Great site by the way!!!

I have the Dell Latitude D820, and my problem is this...............

    When I go to Start>Shutdown

It goes through the motions as in it's shutting down.

But then it will stay on the Wallpaper image, with no Icons and it will just stay on till I hold down the power button.

I want to be able to go to Start>Shutdown

So it will shut down all by its self, so I don't have to hold down the power button!!

Any help would be appreciated indeed.!

Try booting to SAFE mode and then attempt shutdown.

I would suspect a process or device driver is hanging.

Sound Mate, is there a way around this then??

Or if I boot in safe mode and it shuts down correctly will this solve the problem???

Thanks for your time :) :)

These problems can be troublesome to fix but:

    1. You can have a look in Event Viewer (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management) to see if there is anything reported at the time when you are shutting down.

    2. You can try doing Ctrl-Alt-Del while it is hanging and see if that gets you into Task Manager, in which case you can see what programs / processes have not closed down.

The easiest way to fix this would be to reinstall Windows...I wouldn't bother with troubleshooting it.

    Thanks for your comments Guy's.

I just thought of summit, I am using a wireless router, and when I'm finished with the LapTop which is Wireless, I just try to shut down.........

Is or could that be the problem why it won't shut down on it's own?

Like I should disconnect from the internet, then shutdown??

    I am running Windows XP................

Thanks again Guy's for the help, and any more help in advance :) :)

Wireless won't affect shutdown. Most likely, there are too many applications installed on your computer, and one or more of them is causing a problem. Like I said, I would just reinstall Windows.
