Since apparently these batteries age even when not in use I'd wonder at the
possible old age of even an authentic Dell battery off of ebay. Do batteries
have some identification as to when they were produced ? Batteries straight
from Dell should be fresh, at least for recent models. And there's the warranty.

You could check the wear percentage on the batteries. HWMonitor or PC Wizard can read the information.

Do you remember the name of that German supplier?

Where did you buy that one?

If I summarize the various posts, recent Dell batteries are no good and at least some of the aftermarket batteries are not any better.

What about the OEMs from ebay? Can anyone recommend a good seller?

Where did you get that from? OEM batteries are your best bet.

I can't say, because you are probably going to be buying from a German seller as Hong Kong or China sellers are not preferable due to distance, slow shipping, and reliability (majority of fakes come from that area).

Then I guess I do not know the difference between aftermarket and OEM batteries. Could you enlighten me?

OEM batteries have to meet strict requirements (such as performance and capacity) set by Dell, as well as federal regulations regarding safety. Aftermarket batteries rarely meet those requirements because they were designed for low cost. So...aftermarket batteries may not perform as well as OEM, but may also present safety issues (lithium-ion batteries are not to be taken lightly). That's why I always recommend OEM.

I have read the marketing spin by Dell as well. Unfortunately, the "strict requirements" by Dell mean that you battery is unusable junk within 15 months. At that point, I don't much care for OEM batteries anymore if additional cost is involved.

All Li-Ion batteries present a potential safety issue, which is also proven by all the incidents and recalls with OEM batteries from Dell. Of course you should not buy a new battery directly from China and you should make sure that your seller is a "real" company, not some fly-by-night garage operation.

I have never had a Dell OEM battery fail on me in less than two years, with the majority still going strong three or more years. It all goes down to usage patterns, and my batteries are rarely cycled. Perhaps Latitude batteries are made to higher standards than batteries for consumer systems, but OEM can never be a wrong choice.

I have no experience with batteries for Dell consumer notebooks. I was refering to the pretty substantial pool of Latitudes (D630, D820, D830 - and in the past, D610, D810 & various C series) I co-administrate at work. Usage patterns are mixed, of course. Still, useful battery life beyond about 15 months has become a rarity - while it was almost twice that for the C series machines and D610 / D810).

If you have a different experience, good for you. How many different laptops/users do you have experience with?
