I just found this official Dell blog at http://en.community.dell.com/dell-b...hive/2009/11/18/dell-dpc-latency-and-you.aspx, which includes the following update from Dell-John B on February 12:

Unfortunately, Dell only seem to have taken their Alienware customers more seriously. I pity those schmucks and their multi-thousand dollar outlays, although they're getting close to a solution, so good for them. No such luck for us E6400 users.

    Hi

I bought two weeks ago, the Latitude E5410. From the beginning I have problems with sound. This is related to DPC Latency (I checked the program DPC Latency Checker.) I tried everything. Reinstalling the system, the new BIOS, drivers, different settings. But the problem still occurs. Is there a solution? Is this the behavior of the laptop is under warranty or refundable?

I'm surprised by your report because I thought that the internal hardware of the E5410 was very similar to the E6410 which doesn't seem to have latency problems.

Were you getting latency problems on a clean installation of windows without any additional software? At what intervals are you getting latency spikes (I assume that you are running the DPC Latency Checker)? Did you check through the possible problem components as identified by the poll in this thread? I would start by uninstalling the Intel Rapid Storage Manager software.

If you can't fix the problem then you can probably return the computer within a 30 day period.

I've disabled everything in this list and taken out the battery. DPC is low (~200) till it spikes @ 40000 to 90000 every 15 - 30 sec sometimes 1 min

Except esata, trackpad, yes usb is disabled too I think that disabled esata cause I don't see it?

*****edit now it's fine or improved. Either new A07 bios and or uninstalling Dell Control point seems to have fixed it. 2 min and still under 450... Thank FSpagMonster... Dell driver site works NOT AT ALL! And the trackpad is ech! but I'm happy. Everything is still disabled but wireless which in my case doesn't seem to matter for DPC.

I have been having this problem for a long time, and now its getting more and more anoying. Why are Dell not doing anything to stop this.

The support are not very helpful either, most of them suggest i reinstall the audio driver (which does not work). Does anyone know if it is possible to claim my money back because of this problem?

    Will a motherboard change help?

While drivers are the usual cause, some software can also cause latency spikes. Recently I discovered that HWiNFO32 caused some big spikes. However, the program developer made some changes that largely fixed the problem within a few hours of becoming aware of the problem.

Here's one solution. I had 3-5 second long spikes every 35 seconds showing up on DPC latency analyzer with Latitude D820. This caused real time audio applications like Traktor Scratch Pro fail miserably.

Well -- after fresh install of Win XP and disabling pretty much everything I removed the internal CD/DVD drive. Bang - problem solved.

    D'OH! :)
