Hi all. I have a dell latitude d630 and its not booting up. I have read alot of forums telling how if i took the battery out and press the power button for 20\ 30 seconds and then plug the power cable in leaving the battery out it should boot up and work. also resetting the rams and hdd. but it doesn't i also noticed that the fan didn't work as well. I tried pressing the power button with fn button 3 lights come on the left side of the laptop than it bipps for awhile then the fan starts, but it doesn't boot. after restarting the fan works than dell logo comes it starts to load slowly with cracks in the loading bars and the screen freezes. sometimes it loads up with no probs but other times the fan stops and the screen is blank. Can anyone help pls. I am wiiling to try any options.

Sounds like the graphics card is dead. Do you get a similar output/no output on an external display?

Yes it does the same on external monitor. but it does work at times provided i boot with fn and the power button. After some time of all the bipps then i restart the laptop it goes to windows logo and then it freezes. at that time the fan runs good but after rebooting it stops.that means the video card affects other components as well. thanks for your input what should i try next.

I would suspect some general hardware problem resulting in a poor connection. If the GPU (if Nvidia) is dying then it usually causes a corrupted display but doesn't stop the computer from booting. If you haven't removed / replaced the RAM and tried each module in turn, then do so. See the service manual.

When does / did your warranty expire? Latitudes normally have a 3 year warranty which you can check using your service tag on the Dell support site. However, if you have an Nvidia GPU then there is a one year extension for problems related to the GPU.

Yes, sounds like a hardware fault, perhaps power side since it sort of works. Also sounds like the hard drive is still ok... but you could remove it and boot just to see how the remaining hardware responds. And check for any debris in connectors... like the docking port on the bottom... long shot.

You can't buy the graphics chip by itself... you need to buy a new motherboard. If you go down that route, consider buying an Intel board instead. It's a drop-in replacement (you don't need to change any other parts - not even the heatsink), and much less likely to fail.

Check the warranty coverage. Dell give a 1 year warranty extension for the Nvidia GPU (see link in my previous post).

The original warranty should still be active, since the base option is 3-year. As mentioned above, you also get an extra year for the motherboard.
