Depends on which Latitude. All E series has a standard 3 year depot warranty. The specialty Latitudes (netbooks, Latitude 13) should only have a 1 year warranty.

Edit: Just checked and the XT2 tablet has 3 year warranty.

They come with the same warranty they would have if they were brand new! That means a 1-year Warranty on the entry-level models and 3-year Warranty on the more 'upscale' models.

The following include a 3-year warranty-

    E6400/E6410/E6420
    E6500/E6510/E6520
    E4300/E4310
    E6320
    E4200
    XT2 Tablet
    Z600
Also, all Precision notebooks have a standard 3-year warranty.

The following models have a 1-year warranty-

    E5400/E5410/E5420
    E5500/E5510/E5520
    2100/2110/2120 netbook
    Latitude 13 ultra-thin (based on Vostro V13)

It has been my experience that an E64xx is often priced only $100 or so more than a similarly equipped E54xx. It's usually well worth the additional cost both for the warranty and for the improved build quality. There are usually some additional standard features (number or types of ports, for example) that make the E64xx more desirable.

I'm looking at a E5500 and it comes with a 1 year warranty and they are charging $30 for that 1 year warranty.

Btw the laptop is a scratch and dent. Does Dell fix the cosmetic issues with laptops that are classified as SD?

Dell will not fix cosmetic issues if you buy a scratch and dent. However if you find it is way too extreme damage, you can return it (I've seen all the horror stories, palm rest not flush, keyboard half ripped out, missing screws, damaged plastics, giant gashes on the top cover). If you can, try to find a certified refurbished or previously ordered new.

Dell doesn't fix the cosmetic issues unless they have an impact on the functionality of the laptop. For instance, an dent or impact on the side of the case that damages a port or switch would be repaired. A damaged wrist rest or release latch that keeps the lid from staying securely closed would also be replaced.

But a broken screen bezel (as long as it was still functional), scratches or scrapes on the outside of the case and/or display lid would also not be repaired. They are considered 'superficial, cosmetic' damage that don't hinder the system's reliability or performance. Hence the 'Scratch/Dent' designation. If they fixed everything, they'd sell them all as Refurbs.

I took a look at inventory and found two E5500 and both are categorized as Scratch/Dent. I'm guessing the less expensive $549 is the one you're considering and I was checked into the $30 warranty charge that you mentioned. For some reason, both of those E5500 models have an upgrade to from Mail-In Service to Next Business Day On-Site, which is forcing the $30 charge and making the total $579. There's no option to take the standard warranty.

I'm assuming you're interested in the E5500 because it has a 15.4" (16:10 aspect ratio display) and the E5510 and newer have a 16:9 display? Have you considered a 14.1" model (E5400 or E6400) instead? The standard E5500 display is CCFL-backlit instead of the newer, now-common and more energy/battery-efficient LED type. As far as image quality goes it is adequate, but that's about it. It also has 1280x800 resolution, which is the same as the standard 14.1" displays on the E5400/E6400. So you have just as much viewable area, just in a slightly smaller space.

There is a Certified Refurb E5400 listed for $569 and it meets or exceeds the specs of the E5500 in almost every area. Here are the differences-

Windows 7 Home Premium vs. Professional
    2.53GHz P8700 processor vs. 2.26GHz P8400
14.1" WXGA LED vs. 15.4" WXGA CCFL display
Dell 1397-G vs. Dell 1510-N wireless card ($15 will buy an Intel 5100AGN card on Ebay and anyone with 10 minutes and a screwdriver can upgrade)
1-year Mail-In Warranty (NBD service not 'forced' on E5400)
    4GB DDR2 RAM vs. 3GB
*E5400 also has the 'TrackStick' pointer in the middle of keyboard, which is optional and not included on E5500; it is standard on E6400
E5400 also has optional fingerprint reader

    OR

    They have a Scratch/Dent E6400 for $619

    Win7 Pro
    2.4GHz P8600
    14.1" WXGA LED
    2GB DDR2 RAM
    160GB 7200rpm hard drive
    CD-RW drive
    Intel graphics
    Dell 1397-G wireless card
    6-cell battery
    3yr Warranty with Mail-In Service
Full magnesium alloy chassis and display lid
More than 0.6lbs lighter than E5400 and 1.2lbs lighter than E5500
    1.0"-1.2" thick vs. 1.5" thickness of E5400 & E5500

My vote would be the E6400. The E5400/E5500 are thicker and heavier because they're heavy-duty ABS plastic over a metal frame; the E6400 is thinner, lighter and stronger thanks to use of magnesium alloy. The 3-yr warranty alone is well worth it!
