Do you think this Dell would be better than a newer Acer that is on the cheap?

That's a pretty old model, I think I'd rather have a cheap Acer and scrub all the crapware off of it.

At 5 to 6 years old the D600 will be approaching an age where it might start having problems. While the specs on your link say Pentium 4M 1.4GHz, the data sheet here suggests that the CPU is a Pentium M. I wouldn't touch the P4M because they use more power and create more heat.

Ugh after dealing with a few acers at my office I will never own one or recommend them to others. To jut changed the harddrive on one machine I had to create an entire bootable xp disc with the drivers needed just to load from the cd, pure nightmare.

As said above though the D600 is sort of on te age out, search around and you can find a D620 for cheap and they come with much better specs.

You should be able to find a nice used D620 or D630 for about $400 or so. Be sure to check the Dell Outlet in addition to Ebay if you are in the US.
